Few things are more unsettling than preparing a bowl of fresh berries, soaking them in salt water, and suddenly noticing tiny white, thread-like creatures wriggling out of the fruit.
Your first reaction is probably the same as most people’s:
“Is this normal?”
“Have I been eating these all along?”
“Should I throw the entire container away?”
Videos showing this phenomenon have gone viral on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, leaving millions of viewers shocked and wondering whether fresh berries are still safe to eat.
The good news is that there’s more to the story than the dramatic videos often suggest.
## Why Do Tiny White Worms Sometimes Appear?
Some berries, especially raspberries, blackberries, cherries, and occasionally strawberries, can become hosts to tiny fruit fly larvae.
One insect that has attracted attention in recent years is the spotted-wing drosophila, a small fruit fly capable of laying eggs inside ripening fruit rather than waiting until it has begun to rot.
Because the eggs are laid while the fruit is still growing, the tiny larvae may remain hidden inside until the berries are harvested.
They’re often so small that you wouldn’t notice them during normal washing.
## Why Does Salt Water Make Them Come Out?
When berries are soaked in a solution of salt water, some tiny larvae may emerge from the fruit.
Scientists believe changes in the surrounding environment encourage them to leave the fruit.
This doesn’t happen with every berry.
It doesn’t even happen with every package from the same farm.
Many containers won’t contain any larvae at all.
## Does This Mean the Berries Are Unsafe?
Not necessarily.
Fresh fruits are grown outdoors where insects, birds, rain, wind, and countless microorganisms are part of the natural environment.
Food safety authorities recognize that tiny amounts of naturally occurring insect material can occasionally be present in fresh produce despite modern farming and inspection practices.
Finding a tiny larva is certainly unpleasant, but it does not automatically mean the fruit is contaminated with dangerous bacteria or harmful chemicals.
## Should You Throw the Berries Away?
That depends on the situation.
If the berries are:
– Moldy
– Slimy
– Have an unpleasant smell
– Show signs of spoilage
they should be discarded.
However, if the berries are otherwise fresh and you’re simply concerned about insects, many people choose to rinse them thoroughly before eating.
If discovering larvae makes you uncomfortable, it’s perfectly reasonable to discard the fruit and purchase another container.
The decision is ultimately a personal one.
