But the real answer is much simpler—and surprisingly practical.
The fixture shown in the photo is commonly known as a urinal-style toilet for women, sometimes referred to as a female urinal. While it may look unusual to many people today, this type of design has existed for decades and was created with hygiene, efficiency, and accessibility in mind.
Why Is It Shaped This Way?
The extended front section allows users to approach the fixture differently than a traditional toilet.
Depending on the specific design, it can make the restroom experience more comfortable for people who prefer not to sit directly on a public toilet seat. The shape is intended to reduce contact with surfaces while helping maintain cleanliness in high-traffic public facilities.

Is It Related to Space Travel?
Because the restroom is located at the Huntsville Space Center, many people assumed the toilet was designed for astronauts or inspired by technology used in spacecraft.
While that’s an understandable guess, the design isn’t specifically connected to space missions.
Actual space toilets used aboard spacecraft and space stations are far more complex. In zero gravity, waste management requires suction systems, specialized equipment, and extensive astronaut training.
