Emma never imagined that a single decision could alter the course of her life.
At 32, she had built a successful career in marketing, earned the respect of her colleagues, and enjoyed the independence she had worked so hard to achieve. Her days were busy, her evenings peaceful, and although she wasn’t actively looking for a relationship, she was content with where life had taken her.
Then Daniel joined the company.
He was charming, intelligent, and easy to talk to. Their conversations started innocently enough—quick chats by the coffee machine, shared lunches during hectic workdays, and the occasional text message about upcoming projects.
As the weeks passed, their connection grew stronger.
Emma knew office relationships could be complicated. Company policies discouraged them, and she had seen firsthand how workplace romances could create tension. But there was something about Daniel that made her lower her guard.
He listened when she talked. He remembered small details about her life. After months of working together, their friendship slowly turned into something more.
One evening, after celebrating the successful completion of a major project with the team, Emma and Daniel stayed behind after everyone else had left.
What started as a conversation turned into an emotional moment neither of them had expected.
In the excitement and confusion of the evening, they made a choice they hadn’t planned for.
They became intimate without taking proper precautions.
The next morning, Emma felt a mix of emotions—happiness, uncertainty, and concern.
Daniel assured her everything would be fine.
“It’s just us,” he said with a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry.”
Emma wanted to believe him.
Life quickly returned to normal. They agreed to keep their relationship private and focus on work. For a while, everything seemed fine.
But a few weeks later, Emma noticed subtle changes.
She felt unusually tired, even after getting enough sleep. She developed a persistent fever that came and went. Small tasks that used to feel easy suddenly left her exhausted.
At first, she blamed stress.
The company was preparing for a major launch, and long hours had become the norm.
Then she noticed swollen glands in her neck and recurring headaches.
Concerned, she scheduled an appointment with her doctor.
After describing her symptoms, the physician recommended a series of routine tests, including screening for sexually transmitted infections.
Emma felt uncomfortable and embarrassed.
She had always considered herself responsible and health-conscious.
Still, she agreed.
A few days later, her phone rang.
The doctor asked her to come back to the office to discuss the results in person.
Her stomach dropped.
Sitting across from the doctor, Emma heard words she never expected to hear.
One of her tests had come back positive for a serious sexually transmitted infection.
For a moment, everything around her seemed to stop.
