It started with what seemed like a perfectly ordinary visit.
A close friend had recently moved into an older apartment and invited me to stay for a long weekend. The place had plenty of characterâhigh ceilings, original hardwood floors, vintage furniture, and charming details you rarely find in newer buildings. We spent our days catching up, watching movies, exploring the neighborhood, and enjoying the relaxing atmosphere.
Everything seemed completely normal.
But on the morning after my second night there, I woke up with several small, itchy bumps on my arm.
At first, I didn’t think much of them.
Maybe it was dry skin.
Perhaps a mild allergic reaction.
Or maybe I’d been bitten by a mosquito after leaving a window open.
I applied a little lotion and went on with the day.
By the following morning, however, I noticed several more bumps.
This time they appeared in a small line across my shoulder and another cluster near my ankle.
That’s when I realized something wasn’t quite right.
## The Itching Became Impossible to Ignore
Throughout the day, the itching became more noticeable.
The bumps weren’t particularly large, but they were irritating enough that I found myself scratching without even realizing it.
When I mentioned it to my friend, we both started wondering what could have caused it.
We considered several possibilities:
* Laundry detergent.
* A new soap.
* Seasonal allergies.
* Mosquito bites.
* Dry skin.
* Contact with plants.
Nothing seemed to explain why new bumps kept appearing after each night.
## Looking More Closely
That evening, we decided to inspect the bedroom more carefully.
We checked:
* The mattress.
* The sheets.
* The pillows.
* The headboard.
* The bed frame.
At first glance, everything appeared clean.
There were no obvious insects crawling around.
No strange smells.
No visible dirt.
It looked perfectly normal.
But after lifting one corner of the mattress and using the flashlight on a phone, we noticed several tiny dark spots along one of the seams.
That discovery prompted us to investigate further.
## A Common Household Pest
One possible explanation for itchy bumps appearing after sleeping is **bed bugs**.
Bed bugs are small insects that feed on blood, usually while people are asleep.
They’re excellent at hiding during the day and often remain unnoticed until someone begins experiencing bites.
Finding bed bugs doesn’t necessarily mean a home is dirty.
They can be introduced almost anywhere, including:
* Hotels.
* Apartments.
* Dormitories.
* Vacation rentals.
* Public transportation.
* Used furniture.
* Luggage.
Because they hide so effectively, infestations sometimes go unnoticed for weeks.
## What Bed Bug Bites Can Look Like
Not everyone reacts the same way to bed bug bites.
Some people develop noticeable itchy bumps.
Others have very mild reactionsâor none at all.
When reactions occur, bites may appear:
* In small clusters.
* In straight or zigzag lines.
* On exposed skin such as arms, legs, shoulders, or neck.
* Several hours after sleeping.
