A Legend Larger Than the Screen
By 1979, John Wayne was far more than a movie star.
For decades, he had become one of America’s most recognizable actors, starring in nearly 170 films that helped define the Western and war movie genres.
Movies such as Stagecoach, The Searchers, Rio Bravo, True Grit, and The Quiet Man made him an international icon.
His unmistakable walk, commanding voice, and quiet confidence earned him millions of devoted fans across generations.

A Difficult Battle Behind the Scenes
While audiences saw the familiar smile and determined posture, few understood the enormous physical challenge he faced simply by appearing that evening.
Wayne had battled serious health problems for years.
In 1964 he underwent surgery for lung cancer, during which one of his lungs and several ribs were removed.
Many believed his acting career was over.
