When photos like this are shared on social media, the comments quickly fill with wild theories. Some people claim it’s a UFO hiding behind the clouds. Others believe it’s an angel, a portal opening in the sky, an unknown aircraft, or even evidence of supernatural activity.
If someone told you this photo was taken only 21 kilometers from their home, you might feel a little uneasy too. After all, unusual things captured on camera often spark our imagination before logic has a chance to catch up.
But what is really happening in this picture?
The answer is actually much more fascinating than many people expect.
Our brains are naturally wired to recognize familiar shapes, even when they aren’t actually there. Scientists call this phenomenon pareidolia. It explains why people often see faces in clouds, animals in rock formations, or figures on the surface of the Moon.
When light interacts with thick clouds during changing weather conditions, strange patterns can appear for only a few seconds. Bright areas, shadows, and breaks in the cloud cover combine to create images that resemble recognizable objects.
