Then she received a message from a man named Daniel.
He seemed thoughtful, polite, and genuinely interested in getting to know her. He asked about her hobbies, remembered little details from their conversations, and always checked in to ask how her day had gone.
Before long, they were talking every evening.
Melissa found herself smiling at her phone in a way she hadn’t in years.
Daniel claimed he worked overseas on engineering projects and said his schedule made video calls difficult. At first, that explanation seemed reasonable. They exchanged hundreds of messages, talked on the phone several times, and even discussed what life might be like if they eventually met in person.
Weeks turned into months.
Melissa began believing she had finally met someone special.
Then one evening, Daniel told her he had run into a serious problem.
According to his story, an unexpected business issue had frozen access to his bank account while he was abroad. He insisted it was only temporary and promised he would repay every penny if Melissa could help him through the emergency.
At first, she hesitated.
He never pressured her.
Instead, he apologized repeatedly for even asking.
Wanting to help someone she trusted, Melissa sent a small amount of money.
Daniel thanked her endlessly and promised it would be the only time.
But a few days later, another emergency appeared.
Then another.
Each explanation sounded believable on its own.
Eventually, Melissa realized something didn’t feel right.
She suggested meeting in person once he returned home.
Daniel suddenly became distant.
His excuses became more complicated.
When she insisted on a video call, he always found a reason to postpone it.
Concerned, Melissa asked a friend for advice.
Together, they searched some of the photos Daniel had sent.
Within minutes, they discovered the images belonged to someone else entirely.
