A quiet walk along the shoreline can sometimes bring unexpected surprises, especially after a storm when the tide reveals hidden treasures from the sea.
That’s exactly what happened one afternoon at Pass-a-Grille Beach, when wildlife photographer Brianna Varner set out for a peaceful stroll with her boyfriend.
The weather had been rough in the days before, with strong winds and heavy waves reshaping the coastline. As the storm finally passed, the beach was covered in natural debris—shells, seaweed, driftwood, and all kinds of ocean fragments that normally stay hidden beneath the water.
For Varner, this was the perfect opportunity. She often enjoyed photographing small details of nature that most people overlook. That day, she expected nothing more than interesting shells or unusual patterns in the sand.
But nature had something far more extraordinary waiting for her.
While scanning the shoreline, she noticed a small object resting near the waterline. At first glance, it looked like nothing more than a dried leaf washed ashore. It was thin, slightly curved, and blended naturally with the sand and seaweed around it.
Something about its shape, however, felt unusual.
It wasn’t quite like any leaf she had seen on the beach before.
Curiosity got the better of her, and she picked it up to take a closer look.
The moment she held it in her hand, she realized it wasn’t a leaf at all.
It was something entirely different.
The object was firm, textured, and slightly leathery. It had a strange symmetry, almost like it had been carefully designed rather than naturally fallen from a tree.
That’s when she remembered something she had learned before.
It was a “mermaid’s purse.”
Despite the magical name, a mermaid’s purse is actually the egg case of certain marine animals such as sharks, skates, and rays. These cases protect developing embryos as they grow safely on the ocean floor, often attached to seaweed or rocks.
Over time, many of these empty cases wash ashore, leaving behind what looks like a strange piece of ocean debris.
But this one was different.
As Varner held it up toward the sunlight, she noticed something incredible.
There was movement inside.
At first, she wasn’t sure if she was imagining it. But as she carefully adjusted the angle, she saw a faint shadow shifting within the egg case.
Something was alive inside.
Realizing the importance of what she had found, she quickly became more cautious. If the embryo was still developing, exposure to heat and dry air could put it at risk.
Without hesitation, she walked toward a nearby tide pool and gently placed the egg case into the shallow water, hoping it would improve the chances of survival.
