Seeing a sudden lump appear on your wrist overnight can feel alarming. Many people immediately assume the worst when they notice a new bump that wasn’t there the day before.
Social media posts often claim that this type of lump “means you have a serious hidden condition,” but medical experts say the reality is usually much less dramatic.
In most cases, a sudden wrist lump is caused by a benign (non-cancerous) condition known as a ganglion cyst.
What Is a Ganglion Cyst?
A ganglion cyst is a small, fluid-filled sac that commonly develops near joints or tendons, especially in the wrist or hand.
It can appear quite suddenly and may seem to “come out of nowhere,” which is why many people notice it overnight.
These cysts are typically:
- Round or oval in shape
- Soft or firm to the touch
- Painless or mildly uncomfortable
- Movable under the skin in some cases
- Varying in size over time
Why Do They Appear?
Doctors believe ganglion cysts form when joint fluid leaks into surrounding tissue and collects in a small sac.
Common contributing factors include:
- Repetitive wrist movements
- Joint or tendon irritation
- Previous minor injuries (sometimes unnoticed)
- Natural joint fluid changes
However, in many cases, there is no clear cause at all.
Are They Dangerous?
In most situations, ganglion cysts are completely harmless.
They do not spread, and they are not cancerous.
Many people live with them without needing any treatment, especially if they do not cause pain or limit movement.
