The guides immediately rushed toward her in their rescue boat.
Jessica tried to tread water.
She knew panic would only make things worse.
Then she saw it.
The young orca surfaced only a short distance away.

“Did it attack me?” she asked.

“We don’t think so.”
“It appears the whale became curious and passed underneath your kayak.”
“The movement displaced enough water to tip it over.”
Jessica stared silently at the ocean.
The pod was already disappearing into the distance.
News of the incident spread quickly.
Unfortunately, many online posts exaggerated the story.
Some claimed Jessica had been “brutally attacked.”
Others described the event as proof that wild orcas hunted humans.
Neither claim matched what investigators concluded.
Wildlife experts reviewed video captured by another tour group nearby.
Their assessment suggested the young whale had approached out of curiosity rather than aggression.
No bites.
No direct physical contact.
No repeated attempts to approach after Jessica entered the water.
The kayak simply happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Jessica spent the following weeks recovering from minor bruises and the emotional shock.
Friends assumed she would never go near the ocean again.
They were wrong.
