Most drivers use their car’s air conditioning every day without giving the controls much thought. They adjust the temperature, switch the fan speed, and head on their way.
But there’s one small button that many people either misunderstand or never use at all—the air recirculation button.
The symbol is easy to recognize: a small outline of a car with a curved arrow circulating inside it. It’s found on nearly every modern vehicle, yet surveys and automotive experts say many drivers aren’t sure what it actually does or when they should press it.
Some even leave it on all the time, while others never use it.

What Does the Air Recirculation Button Do?
When the recirculation mode is off, your vehicle pulls fresh air from outside and sends it through the heating or air-conditioning system before it enters the cabin.
When the recirculation mode is on, the system closes the outside air intake and continually circulates the air that’s already inside the vehicle.
Instead of constantly cooling or heating new outside air, the climate control system reuses the air already in the cabin.
Why Is It Helpful on Hot Days?
Imagine getting into your car after it has been sitting in the sun.
The interior can become extremely hot.
Once you’ve opened the windows briefly to let the hottest air escape and started the air conditioner, switching on the recirculation mode allows the system to cool the already-conditioned cabin air rather than repeatedly cooling hot outside air.
