He turned off the television.
“They’re confused,” Derek answered gently.
“They don’t know us?”
“No.”
“Then why do they pretend they do?”
It was a question Derek couldn’t answer.
Instead, he hugged his son tightly.
A week later, Derek made a decision.
He would finally address the rumors publicly.
Not because he wanted to satisfy gossip websites.
Not because he wanted to argue with strangers online.
But because his family deserved peace.
At a charity event supporting children’s mental health, reporters immediately surrounded him.
“Derek!”
“Is there any truth to the rumors?”
“Have you requested a DNA test?”
“Is your marriage over?”
He walked calmly toward the microphones.
The room fell silent.
“I’ve spent most of my career avoiding discussions about my private life,” he began.
“But today isn’t about protecting my privacy.”
“It’s about protecting my family.”
He paused.
“My wife has done nothing wrong.”
“Our son is being discussed online by adults who have never met him.”
“He’s a child.”
“Imagine being eight years old and discovering millions of strangers debating whether your parents are really your parents.”
His voice began to crack.
“No child deserves that.”
The reporters lowered their cameras.
“This rumor began with a photograph and someone’s imagination.”
“It became a story because people chose to share it before asking whether it was true.”
“My family will not participate in gossip.”
“We will not respond to anonymous accusations.”
“And we certainly won’t allow strangers to define who we are.”
He looked directly into the cameras.
“If you truly support families, stop turning children into entertainment.”
Then he walked away.
The speech spread across the internet even faster than the original rumor.
This time, however, the response was different.
Parents praised Derek for defending his son.
Mental health advocates highlighted the emotional damage caused by online speculation.
Even some entertainment journalists admitted the original rumors should never have received so much attention.
Several websites quietly removed their earlier articles.
Others published corrections acknowledging they had relied on unverified social media claims.
Weeks later, the frenzy faded.
Photographers disappeared.
Television shows moved on to new celebrity gossip.
Life slowly returned to normal.
One Saturday morning, Derek sat in the backyard helping Noah build a birdhouse.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“Are people still talking?”
Derek smiled.
“Some probably are.”
“Does it matter?”
He looked at his son.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the people who matter already know the truth.”
Noah nodded thoughtfully before picking up another piece of wood.
“I like our truth better.”
