The Phone Call
The next morning, my phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
I almost ignored it.
Something told me not to.
“Hello?”
A man’s voice answered.
“Is this Emily Carter?”
“Yes.”
“My name is Peter Wallace.”
There was a pause.
“I recently purchased a Corvette from your parents.”
My heart started racing.
Then he said something that changed everything.
“There’s a problem with the paperwork.”
I felt a knot form in my stomach.
“What kind of problem?”
Another pause.
Then came the words that made my blood run cold.
“Your signature is on the bill of sale.”
I nearly dropped the phone.
“My signature?”
“Yes.”
I swallowed hard.
“That’s impossible.”
The man hesitated.
Then he quietly replied:
“That’s what I thought.”
A Shocking Discovery
Peter emailed me a copy of the paperwork.
I opened the attachment.
My hands shook as I looked at the document.
There it was.
My name.
My signature.
At least, something pretending to be my signature.
It wasn’t mine.
Not even close.
Someone had forged it.
Someone had illegally signed documents transferring ownership of my Corvette.
I knew immediately who had done it.
And for the first time, this wasn’t just a family dispute.
It was fraud.
The Truth Comes Out
I confronted my parents later that day.
At first, they denied everything.
Then they minimized it.
Then they attempted to justify it.
Eventually my mother admitted she had signed the paperwork herself because she believed it was “basically the same thing.”
Her exact words stunned me.
“We’re family.”
As if that excused forging legal documents.
As if family relationships erased ownership rights.
As if stealing was acceptable when relatives were involved.
Taking Action
For years, I had avoided conflict with my family.
I had tolerated favoritism.
Ignored unfair treatment.
Made excuses.
Not anymore.
I informed them that I intended to pursue the matter legally.
The reaction was immediate.
Suddenly I was accused of being selfish.
Unforgiving.
Cold.
My brother called me greedy.
My parents claimed I was destroying the family.
Not one of them apologized.

Fortunately, Peter turned out to be an honest man.
Once he learned the truth, he fully cooperated.
He provided copies of every document.
Every message.
Every payment record.
Everything investigators needed.
He had purchased the car believing the sale was legitimate.
He was a victim too.
