When you move into an older home, you expect to uncover a few surprises. Maybe it’s a stack of vintage newspapers hidden behind a wall, a forgotten trunk tucked away in the basement, or even a collection of antique tools left behind by previous owners. A plumb bob is a weighted object suspended from a string or wire that uses gravity to establish a perfectly vertical line. Before laser levels and modern measuring equipment became common, builders relied heavily on plumb bobs to ensure walls, support beams, and structural components were perfectly aligned.
During construction, workers often used them to transfer measurements between different levels of a building, helping maintain accurate alignment from the foundation all the way to the roof.
In some cases, builders left these reference points in place temporarily while completing various stages of construction. Occasionally, they were simply forgotten and remained hidden inside attics or wall spaces for decades.
