At 45, Melissa had finally begun to feel optimistic again. After years of focusing on work, raising her children, and recovering from a difficult divorce, she decided it was time to open her heart to someone new. Friends encouraged her to give love another chance, and after several months of getting to know a kind, thoughtful man through mutual acquaintances, she felt ready to embrace the possibility of happiness once more.
Their relationship developed gradually. They enjoyed weekend walks, quiet dinners, and long conversations about their families, careers, and future dreams. Melissa felt healthier emotionally than she had in years. She laughed more, smiled more, and believed she had finally left the most painful chapter of her life behind.
Several weeks into the relationship, however, she began noticing subtle physical changes. At first, she dismissed them as stress. She experienced occasional fatigue, mild discomfort, and an unusual rash on one arm. Assuming it was an allergic reaction or perhaps exhaustion from balancing work and family responsibilities, she continued with her normal routine.
Over the following days, her symptoms became more noticeable. She developed a persistent fever, swollen lymph nodes, muscle aches, and increasing weakness. Even simple daily activities became exhausting. Her coworkers noticed she looked unusually pale and encouraged her to visit a doctor.
Melissa initially resisted, believing she simply needed more rest.
