“When I married Obinna, I testified against them.”
“They swore they’d kill me.”
“They murdered my brother.”
“My sister disappeared.”
“My mother was poisoned.”
She rested a trembling hand on her stomach.
“When I became pregnant…”
“They found us.”
Obinna continued.
“They burned our home.”
“We barely escaped.”
“The police offered witness protection.”
“But someone inside leaked our location.”
“So we disappeared.”
I looked around the hidden room.
“This place…”
“…became the only safe place.”
Ada nodded.
“I haven’t seen daylight in almost a year.”
Tears streamed down her face.
“I hate it.”
“But if I leave…”
“They’ll kill my baby.”
I wanted to believe them.
Yet something still felt wrong.
“If that’s true…”
“Why marry me?”
Obinna’s shoulders slumped.
“Because Ada asked me to.”
Both women looked at each other.
I felt dizzy.
Ada squeezed my hand.
“The doctors told me I might not survive childbirth.”
“I wanted someone kind.”
“Someone who could help raise my child if I died.”
I pulled my hand away.
“So you found someone who looked like you?”
“I didn’t plan it.”
Obinna answered quietly.
“I met you by accident.”
“The resemblance terrified me.”
“But Ada insisted.”
“I never wanted to deceive you.”
“You married me under false pretenses!”
“I know.”
“I hated myself every day.”
My anger exploded.
“You stole my life!”
“You made me believe I was your wife while your real wife was hidden beneath my bedroom!”
Obinna lowered his head.
“I deserved that.”
At that moment, every light in the underground room suddenly flickered.
The security monitors on one wall flashed to life.
Musa’s frightened voice echoed through the speakers.
“Sir!”
“They’re here!”
Obinna sprinted toward the screens.
Several black SUVs had smashed through the front gate.
Masked men poured into the compound carrying rifles.
Ada gasped.
“They found us.”
Obinna immediately pressed a hidden alarm.
Steel doors slammed shut throughout the underground shelter.
The lights switched to emergency power.
“They’ll never get down here,” he said.
A deafening explosion shook the ceiling.
Dust rained from above.
Another explosion followed.
“They brought explosives.”
The room trembled violently.
I looked at Ada.
She suddenly clutched her stomach.
“Oh no…”
