Some bakers choose to remove it when making very smooth custards or delicate desserts because it can slightly affect texture if left intact.
Even then, it’s removed only for appearance or consistency—not because it’s unsafe.
Unfortunately, photos of chalazae often go viral online with misleading captions claiming they are parasites or signs that the egg is spoiled.
Food safety experts consistently explain that this is not the case.
A healthy, fresh egg can naturally contain one or two visible chalazae.
Of course, there are situations where an egg should be discarded.
If the shell is badly cracked before you buy it, if the egg has an unusually foul smell after opening, or if the contents appear discolored in an unusual way, it’s best not to eat it.
But a visible chalaza alone is not a reason to throw the egg away.
Many people are surprised to learn how fascinating eggs really are.
An eggshell contains thousands of microscopic pores that allow gases to pass through while protecting the developing egg.
The yolk provides nutrients.
The egg white cushions and protects it.
The chalaza helps stabilize everything inside.
Together, these structures form a remarkably efficient natural design.
After learning all of this, I looked back at the egg on my plate.
Instead of seeing something strange, I saw something that had been there all along—I had simply never noticed it before.
I went ahead and cooked the egg.
It tasted exactly as expected.
No strange flavor.
No unusual texture.
Just breakfast.
Later that day, I shared the photo with friends.
Almost everyone admitted they would have reacted the same way.
Some said they would have thrown the egg away immediately.
Others confessed they had seen the white strand before but never knew what it was.
One friend laughed and said,
“I’ve probably eaten hundreds of those without realizing it.”
Another replied,
“Now I know why my grandmother always said the freshest eggs have stronger white strings.”
It’s amazing how something completely normal can seem alarming simply because we’ve never paid attention to it before.
