My heart sank.
“You weren’t there.”
“I changed my mind.”
Another pause.
“Evelyn…”
His voice sounded different now.
Hard.
“You wouldn’t happen to have found anything…would you?”
I looked toward the attic stairs.
The old wooden floor creaked.
Someone was climbing them.
Slowly.
One step at a time.
I wasn’t alone.
Michael had never gone to work.
He had followed me.
The attic door slowly opened.
He stood there smiling.
But it wasn’t the smile I’d known for years.
It was the smile of someone who knew the truth had finally caught up with him.
His eyes drifted toward the envelope in my hands.
“So,” he said quietly.
“You found Clara’s little secret.”
He took one slow step forward.
Then another.
“There are some things…”
“…that should have stayed buried.”
I tightened my grip on my phone, silently pressing the emergency call button while backing toward the attic window.
Outside, I could hear the faint sound of approaching sirens.
Michael hadn’t noticed.
Yet.
His smile faded as the distant sirens grew louder.
For the first time since Clara’s death, it wasn’t me who looked afraid.
It was him.
