It started with what seemed like a simple allergic reaction.
My 63-year-old father woke up one morning complaining that his face felt tight and itchy. When he looked in the mirror, his eyes and cheeks were noticeably swollen. At first, we assumed it was something minor—perhaps a reaction to something he had eaten or a new soap.
We gave him an over-the-counter antihistamine, hoping the swelling would disappear within a few hours.
By evening, the swelling had improved slightly.
We thought the worst was over.
We couldn’t have been more wrong.
The following morning, Dad came downstairs scratching his arms nonstop. He said the itching wasn’t limited to one spot—it was everywhere. His scalp itched so badly he couldn’t stop rubbing it, and his back, chest, stomach, and legs all felt like they were on fire.
When we looked closer, we noticed tiny red bumps beginning to appear across his skin.
At first there were only a few.
By lunchtime, there were dozens.
By bedtime, they seemed to cover almost every part of his body.
None of us had ever seen anything like it.
The itching became unbearable.
He barely slept that night because every time he closed his eyes, the urge to scratch woke him again. Even wearing a shirt became uncomfortable because the fabric rubbed against the irritated skin.
The next morning, we examined him more carefully.
His chest was covered with hundreds of small, reddish bumps.
They spread across his shoulders, arms, stomach, and back.
Some areas had merged into larger patches that looked inflamed.
Others remained as tiny raised spots.
His scalp was affected too, making it painful to comb his hair.
He tried oatmeal baths.
Cool compresses.
Calamine lotion.
Fragrance-free moisturizers.
Nothing seemed to provide lasting relief.
The itching would calm for a few minutes before returning stronger than before.
Naturally, our minds began racing.
Was it chickenpox?
Shingles?
An allergic reaction?
Poison ivy?
Some kind of infection?
Or something much more serious?
We scheduled an urgent appointment with his doctor.
During the examination, the physician asked dozens of questions.
Had he started any new medications recently?
Had he changed laundry detergent?
Used new shampoo?
Been gardening?
Traveled recently?
Been around anyone with a contagious illness?
Had he been bitten by insects?
Each answer ruled out another possibility.
Blood work was ordered.
Additional testing followed.
Meanwhile, the rash continued spreading.
