“That isn’t true.”
“I asked Dad many times why Mom wasn’t around.”
“He never insulted her.”
“He never filled us with hate.”
“He simply said…”
“‘Your mother made choices I cannot explain. I hope one day she finds peace.'”
A collective gasp swept through the audience.
Nora wiped away a tear.
“Our father protected the reputation of the person who abandoned him.”
Gabriella nodded.
“That is what dignity looks like.”
Clarissa’s confident expression completely vanished.
She lowered her eyes.
Lily faced the audience once more.
“Some people think being a parent means giving birth.”
She shook her head.
“Being a parent means showing up.”
“It means staying.”
“It means choosing your children every single day.”
The stadium stood in applause.
Even the faculty rose to their feet.
The standing ovation continued for nearly a full minute.
I couldn’t stop crying.
Then Lily smiled.
“Before we receive our diplomas, we have one more surprise.”
The principal nodded knowingly.
Three volunteers walked onto the stage carrying white envelopes.
Lily spoke again.
“Every scholarship we earned over the last four years came with one condition.”
“We promised to use part of the money to help someone else.”
“We decided that someone should be Dad.”
The audience laughed softly.
Nora continued.
“Today, together with our university, local businesses, and several anonymous donors…”
Gabriella opened one envelope.
“We’re paying off every remaining dollar of our father’s mortgage.”
The crowd exploded.
I covered my mouth.
Lily wasn’t finished.
“And because that’s still not enough…”
A representative from the university approached the microphone.
He smiled.
“Sir, your daughters have inspired our entire community.”
He handed me another folder.
“On behalf of the Alumni Foundation, we’re honored to present you with the Community Legacy Award, including a financial grant to ensure your retirement is comfortable.”
I stared at the folder in disbelief.
My knees nearly gave out.
The audience applauded louder than ever.
Clarissa slowly stepped backward.
People around her recognized who she was.
Some whispered.
Others simply looked disappointed.
