Parents, Be Careful—My Daughter Ran Inside Crying After Finding This in Our Backyard… Do You Know What It Is?

After learning this, I decided to make a few changes around the yard.

First, I kept the grass cut short.

Then I removed piles of leaves and old lumber that had been sitting behind the shed for years. We also cleaned up areas where rodents might hide and made sure pet food wasn’t being left outside overnight.

Within a few weeks, snake sightings became much less frequent.

Wildlife experts generally recommend avoiding attempts to handle or kill snakes unless absolutely necessary. Many snake species are beneficial because they help control populations of mice, rats, insects, and other small pests that can damage gardens or spread disease.

If you frequently see snakes near areas where children play, it’s a good idea to teach kids a few simple safety rules:

  • Never touch or try to catch a snake.
  • Stay several feet away if you see one.
  • Tell an adult immediately.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes when walking through tall grass or wooded areas.
  • Keep pets from approaching unfamiliar wildlife.

If you’re ever unsure whether a snake is venomous, the safest approach is to keep your distance and contact your local wildlife or animal control agency for guidance. Never rely on appearance alone to identify a snake, especially if you live in an area where venomous species are present.

Looking back, I’m grateful my daughter did exactly the right thing. Instead of trying to get closer, she ran inside and told me immediately.

It turned into an important lesson for our family—not about being afraid of wildlife, but about respecting it and knowing how to respond safely.

Sometimes the best way to keep snakes away isn’t with expensive repellents or gadgets. It’s simply making your yard less attractive by reducing hiding places, controlling rodents, keeping grass trimmed, and giving wildlife plenty of space to move on naturally.

And while seeing a snake in the backyard can certainly be startling, understanding why it’s there can make the situation a lot less frightening—and a lot easier to manage.
