It wasn’t just metal.
It was a steel lockbox.
Heavy-duty.
Industrial.
With a large padlock still attached.
One officer looked at another.
“We’re going to wait until it’s fully exposed.”
By evening, the box finally slid free.
It landed on the wet grass with a heavy thud.
The officers photographed everything before carefully opening it.
The lock had rusted slightly but gave way with bolt cutters.
When the lid lifted, everyone fell silent.
Inside were dozens of neatly wrapped bundles.
Cash.
Stacks and stacks of cash.
Alongside them sat several passports.
A handgun.
Three cell phones.
And a thick folder filled with documents.
One detective quietly closed the lid.
“This just became a much bigger investigation.”
He turned toward me.
“Ma’am, we’d like to ask you a few questions.”
I invited them inside.
The detective asked if I’d noticed anyone around the house recently.
Had I received threats?
Did my husband have enemies?
Had anyone contacted me unexpectedly?
The questions became increasingly specific.
Then he asked something that caught me completely off guard.
“Did your husband ever mention a storage unit?”
“No.”
“What about a man named Victor Salazar?”
The name meant nothing to me.
The detective exchanged a glance with his partner.
“Interesting.”
Before leaving, they asked me not to discuss the contents of the box with anyone.
Of course, by then the entire neighborhood already knew something extraordinary had happened.
The next morning, news vans parked outside my house.
Reporters knocked on my door.
I ignored them all.
Later that afternoon, Detective Harris returned alone.
He carried an old photograph.
“Do you recognize this man?”
I stared.
It was Michael.
Standing beside another man.
Both smiling.
The picture looked at least fifteen years old.
“No,” I whispered.
“I’ve never seen him before.”
The detective nodded slowly.
“The second man disappeared eleven years ago.”
My heart skipped.
“What does that have to do with my husband?”
“We’re not sure yet.”
He explained that the lockbox contained evidence connected to a long-unsolved financial crime involving millions of dollars stolen from an investment company.
The documents appeared to identify several people involved.
