THE BIGGEST GOSSIP IN THE VILLAGE OF LOKUN

“I am truly sorry. Please, forgive me. I only wanted to be heard. I did not want to hurt you.”

Ami closed her eyes for a moment. The wind blew gently, making the leaves of the great mango tree tremble.

Finally, she whispered, “I forgive you.”

A warm, light breeze moved through the village. It wrapped around Sira. She touched her mouth.

Her lips were shrinking little by little.

Her eyes widened.

“It’s going down!” she cried.

The villagers stared in silence, shocked. Sira’s mouth was returning to normal. The whispers had stopped. The wind calmed.

Sira jumped to her feet and ran into her father’s arms. They were overjoyed.

The village remained silent.

The next morning, Sira crossed the market. Her mouth was normal again. People looked at her but no longer whispered. Some even gave her small smiles.

She went straight to Mama Lina’s stall.

“I am sorry,” she said softly. “I will help you sell today.”

Mama Lina and her two daughters smiled and opened their arms to her.

“Welcome, my daughter.”

Then she went to see Baba Jimo.

“I am truly sorry for everything,” she said.

He nodded and handed her a small sachet of herbs.

“This is for your good health,” he said.

She thanked him.

Later, Sira searched everywhere for Ami, but she could not find her anywhere. She asked around, but no one had seen her.

Finally, she returned to sit alone under the great mango tree. She listened to the wind and murmured softly:

“I understand the lesson now. I should never have meddled in the lives of those who were not hurting me, and even less should I have made up stories about people.”

The wind blew gently, and for the first time in several weeks, she felt at peace.
