The courtroom exploded.
Even the judge couldn’t hide a smile.
Michael waited patiently until the laughter settled.
“So I figured…”
“…a few years in prison might actually be less embarrassing.”
The judge removed his glasses.
“Mr. Carter…”
“Yes, Your Honor?”
“You’re telling this court…”
“…you refused to return $1.1 million because you didn’t want your wife to say, ‘I told you so’?”
Michael nodded.
“Exactly.”
The judge stared at him for several long seconds.
